The Zalunardo family

The following brief biography was written using information from the interview recorded with Noemi Campagnolo nee Zalunardo  in 2014 and from records in the archives at Castelcucco in the province of Treviso. Photos: courtesy of Noemi.

When Eugenio Luigi Zalunardo was born in 1905, his parents, brothers and sisters were living with his grandparents in a farmhouse in Castelcucco – about 86 kilometres north-west of Venice in the Veneto region. There were five sons and two daughters in the family and Eugenio was the youngest and the only member to emigrate to Australia.

Eugenio arrived in Adelaide on 18 April 1927 per ‘Regina d’Italia’. Within about eight years he had a market garden of five – six acres on the southern side of Grange Road between Frogmore and Findon Roads. He had 25 glasshouses and grew tomatoes and beans and outside vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, lettuces and artichokes.

Eugenio married Luigia Ballestrin in 1943. Luigia was born in Valla’, Provincia di Treviso on 1 December 1916 and she had arrived in Adelaide with her mother, Santa nee Guidolin, in 1938 to join other members of the Ballestrin family: Isidoro; Antonio, and Ermenegildo who settled in Adelaide with their families and cousin Giuseppe. In addition to the market garden, Eugenio and Luigia had an extensive domestic garden with fruit trees and chickens, ducks and rabbits.
