Silvano Zampin

Silvano Primo Zampin, born 6 February 1910, was 18 years old when he arrived in Adelaide per ‘Citta di Genova’ on 16 January 1928. He came from Riese in the Province of Treviso in the Veneto region. He joined his brother, Pietro, who had arrived in 1925.

For the first two years, Silvano worked as a labourer in Whyalla about 380 kilometres north west of Adelaide. In 1930, Pietro, along with another Italian, was killed in a car accident at Woodville. Silvano moved to Adelaide and was visiting his brother’s grave at West Terrace Cemetery when he met Amelia Katherine Shaw who was there to visit her grandmother’s grave. They married in 1931. Amelia was the daughter of Irish-Australians and lived at Parkside with her parents at the time.

After they married, Silvano and Amelia rented accommodation at 6 West Terrace, in the City of Adelaide where their first two daughters, Milva and Bruna, were born. At the time Silvano was working for a Chinese market gardener on land where the Adelaide Airport is located now. They moved to the southern end of Frogmore Road, St James Park and lived next door to the Rebuli family for several years. Silvano was naturalised in 1937.

In about 1937/38 Silvano and Amelia moved to Henley Beach Road, Lockleys, behind the Catholic Church which was built in the 1950s. The Zampins sub-leased land from a fellow Veneto, Enrico Giacomelli. They worked ten glasshouses growing tomatoes and some outside vegetables. Silvano also worked at the Munitions factory at Woodville during the war.

Silvano and Amelia bought their own house and land at Findon in the mid 1950s – the fulfilment of their dreams. They moved the glasshouses and continued to grow vegetables with the assistance of family members, and young men from Riese whom Silvano sponsored to Australia.

Silvano and Amelia had nine children: Milva, Bruna, Roma, Angela, Christina, Virginia, Sandra, Cynthia and Peter. In 1971, Peter was killed in a motor-bike accident when he was 18 years old.

Silvano died on 28 August 1982, and Millie died on 26 August 1999. Angela Lucchin nee Zampin died on 24 August 2016. Sandra Semola nee Zampin died in March 2018.

Most of Silvano and Amelia’s daughters have been interviewed for the project.

Silvano e Amelia ebbero nove figli: Milva, Bruna, Roma, Angela, Christina, Virginia, Sandra, Cynthia e Peter.

Sandra SEmola nee Zampin morì  in marzo 2018.

Milva Rebuli nata Zampin; Bruna Semola nata Zampin, Roma Bordignon nata Zampin; Christine Zampin; Virginia Rodato nata Zampin; Sandra Semola nata Zampin;
Cynthia Kradolfer nata Zampin.
